OTUG Java SIG EJB Study Group

OTUG Java SIG

The EJB Study Group met monthly from January through June, 2003. The general plan for the group is described below.

The group will be working through the Mastering EJB II book by Ed Roman. The general plan is to read selected chapters beforehand and then on the meeting nights compile, deploy, and run the examples in the book and others as we may find to supplement those concepts.

The following preparations were suggested for the January, 2003 meeting:

  1. Obtain a copy of Mastering EJB 2nd edition by Ed Roman. Available also by download PDF at www.theserverside.com. (requires FREE registration)
  2. Read chapters 1-3 and appendix A.
  3. Download the source code file, also at TheSeverSide.com
  4. Download and install the SUN Reference edition of J2EE 1.3 (version 1.4 is still in beta). I have these files on CD for anyone who needs them on Tuesday night.
  5. Be ready to compile and deploy the Roman example of "HelloWorld" from chapt 3. We will also play around with some other simple bean examples from the Sun Tutorial.
  6. If you are very ambitious - download the 6.1 version of BEA Weblogic (90 MB). I have it on a 100MB zip disk, not CD. For those of us without a license - we only get 30 days use of it. Roman's source code is geared for the BEA 6.1 version.
  7. If smeone can bring an RMI example to play aound with, that would be great. I tried to get a chat server example going from Deitel's Advanced Java book, but could not get it to run.
  8. Finally, I hope to construct a "cookbook" over the next several months. Bring your ideas for items in the cookbook. If you have something in the way of notes in MS Word I would love to include them in the cookbook.
