presented by Michael Nygard

Summary

Everything changes after Release 1.0. One batch of consultants leave, key developers jockey to get themselves reassigned, and the free-wheeling development environment is replaced by the painful rigor of operations. Or, at least, it should be.

Systems in production require a different kind of care and feeding. If you have to live with a system in production, your quality of life is largely determined by the things you put in place before Release 1.0. This talk covers the topics that will give you God-like powers over your production systems.

If you are an architect or developer who has ever put a system in production--or expects to put a system into production--then this talk is for you.

Speaker

Michael Nygard has been a professional programmer and architect for over 15 years. During that time, he has delivered running systems to the U. S. Government, the military, banking, finance, agriculture, and retail industries. Michael has usually lived with the systems he created for a significant period of time. This vital experience in real-world operations has changed his views about software architecture and development.

Michael has written numerous articles and editorials, spoken at Comdex, and co-authored one of the early Java books.

In his previous position as Director of Engineering for Totality Corporation, Michael led the operations team through the launch of a tier 1 retail site. His experience with the birth and infancy of this retail platform gives him a unique perspective on building software for high performance and high reliability in the face of an actively hostile environment.
